Judge’s Statement

Jurying an art exhibitions is always an invigorating experience. In this exhibit, more than 100 entries were reduced to what could fill the gallery, about 70 pieces, and of those selected , the juror must award the works which exemplify the utmost caliber. During the inclusion and awarding process, I critiqued, interpreted and admired works that offered diverse styles and techniques. The Fall season was another influence with not just its color and tone , but also for its reminder of constant change and a coming of renewal. Each art work part of the exhibition inclusion can stand on its own.

As an educator, I very much look for the qualities that I try to instill in my own students. Instead of thinking of artworks as just objects or pretty pictures, it is arguably more engaging to think about them as triggers for experiences or emotions. The strongest artwork breaks through the external monologue of questioning and problem solving, fully committing to participation in a larger dialogue of influence and relationship, ultimately providing clarity for finding its voice and place within. My selections are based on this conceptual notion, but also on the level of technical craftsmanship and design consideration presented within each piece.

Congratulations and thank you, to all the artists who submitted work for consideration. Special congratulations go to the award winners as these were truly exceptional works. I encourage everyone who creates art to submit again next year-keep trying, reflecting and creating. Do your thing, whether you find it to be accepted quickly or not. Keep striving to hone your craft, to find your voice, and to find ways to share it with others.
